I can't help wondering if 'Oprah' Obama has made his first big mistake. I know Pres. Johnson's famous adage concerning the desirability of having your enemies inside the tent pissing out rather than the opposite, but even so, the Clintons can only be described as toxic. It is surely totally embarrassing and humiliating for Bill, a former president, to be made to declare the name of every single donar to his various mysterious funds. It is quite clear that 'Oprah' Obama assumes he's a crook and wants to make sure that the provenence of every single dollar is accounted for. The question is, why didn't Bill tell him to take a running jump? I can only think that 'Hillbilly' has the dirts on him and told him to do whatever it takes to get her the job of Secretary of State - or else!
Another question is whether or not she's up to the job? It seems to me, from a distance, that she has two qualifications. First, she's tough and ruthless; and second, she appears to have a gut feeling for what is in America's interest and what is not. However, against that one wonders if she's intelligent enough to translate a policy into action. Her command of her election campaign was complacent to begin with and then emotionally hysterical to end with and she deserved to lose. Also, I remember when Bill gave her the job of inflicting a nationalised health service on America she made a complete 'cods' of the job.
Well, I suspect that it will not matter that much because I think Obama will 'do a Roosevelt', by which I mean that he will pick several different advisers part of whose remit will be foreign policy and let them fight it out between them whilst he remains aloof as the final arbiter but not necessarily letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing. It's not a very good way to run a foreign policy but then again, Roosevelt wasn't much of a president, either.
