This little bit of irony is one to hug and nurture. Apparently, the yob 'youf' hit on the head by a police baton and who then required brain surgery (I wonder if there was a 'finder's fee'?) is a student of philosophy. As he convalesces in hospital he might care to ponder an age-old philosophical conundrum concerning causality. Usually, it is put in these terms: if a nut is placed on an anvil and smashed with a hammer, is it the hammer or the anvil which is the cause of its untimely demise? Or, to put this in terms which will be more easily understood by our particular philosophy 'student', if in a riot situation you place your head in proximity to a police baton is it the baton or the owner of the head who is the final cause of a thumping headache? At this point philosophers will drone on for hours as they tie themselves in knots of inscrutable linguistic logic which, fortunately, we need not attempt to unravel.

Our 'Hero of the Revolution' is called Alfie Meadows - sweet-looking little fellow, isn't he? - and he attends Kingston 'University' (note well the inverted commas!) According to The Mail but with my emphasis:
Alfie's mother, Susan Meadows, 55, an English literature lecturer at Roehampton University, said her son had described the blow to his head as 'the hugest he had ever felt'.
If those were indeed her actual words then I am forced to record that I would hesitate to spend 9 bob let alone £9 grand being taught English by this lady. Apparently, she too was in attendance at the riot but in a different area and therefore, sadly, her head was not in the immediate vicinity of a police baton which, I am beginning to think, is rapidly becoming the essential classroom-aid de nos jours!
However, as Alfie nurses his bump in hospital I only wish to be kind and in that spirit I offer him the lyric of that old song: What's It All About, Alfie?
What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
what will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
and you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie.
There you are, Alfie, there's more philosophy in that old lyric than you'll find in Kingston Polytechnic 'University'!
Brilliant!

Shame on a lad with a brain injury using imperfect English eh? I'm sure if it were your son and you were at his bedside you'd have corrected him.

Quite apart from being particularly hateful piece, if you actually read the article from which you quote, the guy doesn't *go* to Kingston University. Shove you're own pedantic credentials a little further up your rectum with the rest of it.

It's amazing you took the time and made the effort to write this utterly hateful tripe. Snobbery and condescension mixed with vile goading of the injured. Though, I'm sure your education and charming punditry will see you through when no one rushes to piss on the fire that's been lit for you.
Posted by: Ralph | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 15:46
You've made your mother ashamed of you. This shows what kind of vile and and insensitive person you are. Go away.
Posted by: GGAbrams | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 15:48
Well, there's as fine a set of examples of what passes for thinking and writing amongst the, er, intelligentsia of our higher universities! If you're a postman, or working in a call centre, or a nurse, struggling to make ends meet for your family, I'll bet the knowledge that your taxes go towards paying for these cretins gives you a lovely warm feeling - as well as a red mist before the eyes!

A quite disgraceful thing to say. This kid was engaging his democratic right to protest- something numerous generations have fought and died for. There is no indication he was engaged in anything criminal. And you're mocking him whilst he lies in a hospital bed? I think this anti-student hysteria has gone too far when people are celebrating the hospitalisation of young people. Our country seems to have a really rather unpleasant public sphere at the moment, no doubt encouraged by the internet- it takes a brave man indeed to hide behind a computer screen and type of such nasty vitriol. Take a deep breath and think about what you're actually writing before you press the "post" button next time, please.
Posted by: Alexander Brogan | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 15:53
You are an ignorant piece of shit who stands for nothing but your own empty sense of self-worth. Though I don't think you should be batonned I think it would be the world's gain if it turned out your genitals didn't work, preventing you for passing on your vile, contemptuous values onto any innocent offspring. You have failed as a human being, and your disgraceful waste of words is a bad reflection on everybody. You're shaming mankind.
Posted by: Alex | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 16:07
Essentially I feel your earlier points about Charlie Gilmours disgraceful behaviour, holding our war dead in contempt, has been rendered totally moot by this post. The greatest honour we can give our war dead is honouring their memory by treating the Cenotaph with respect, and treating the rights they died for with respect too. Otherwise the Cenotaph becomes a meaningless propaganda cipher for whichever government happens to be in power, whilst the very real victories of that great generation are dismantled. I'm sorry for the second post, but I find your sentiment really quite appalling and disrespectful of those who died for democracy.
Posted by: Alexander Brogan | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 16:11
You're a fucking idiot, you don't deserve democracy let alone free speech
Posted by: Rob | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 16:15
Your picture of the young man is out of date. The following website has a more recent one:

I don't think he's in much of a mood for your correction, though.

"Though I don't think you should be batonned I think it would be the world's gain if it turned out your genitals didn't work, preventing you for passing on your vile, contemptuous values onto any innocent offspring."
Too late Alex. Fuck you pal.
And just to rub it in, my University education, circa 1984-7, cost next to nothing. And now, 25 years later, into the bargain, I don't even have to pay for yours!
Maybe those Lib-Dem's aren't so bad after all, eh?

Hang on a minute, Lawrence, you might have been in receipt of a grant but I had to keep you in beer and fags and condoms for 3 years, and in your case none of it came cheap!
Posted by: David Duff | Sunday, 12 December 2010 at 16:56
Mr. Brogan, I will reply to you directly because at least your two comments expressed something more than the grunt-snuffles of the others.
Alfie Meadows went to a riot. He went voluntarily, no one forced him - except perhaps his mother! He knew, as everyone else in the country knew, unless they were deaf, dumb, blind and lacked a sense of smell, that it was going to be a riot - but still, he went.
Having joined in he was obviously determined not to be just an ordinary foot soldier, oh no, he volunteered for the 'Forlorn Hope'(*) platoon by pushing to the front and getting within baton reach of an irritable copper. There he received what anyone with a 'D-' grade in GCSE Flower Arranging (enough to get you into Oxbridge, I believe!) could have told him with reasonable accuracy - a smack! Happily (for the copper) he was not killed but of course the manipulaters behind these riots, the ones who cheer the 'stoopids' on to ever greater excesses, are bitterly disappointed. If only little Alfie had done the decent thing and popped his clogs they could have had a magnificent propaganda coup.
One doesn't expect too much in the way of intelligence from the young, as I recall personally from my own mispent youth, but then I was never bright enough to go to university. You lot are supposed to be the brightest of the bright. God help us all!

Sorry, I forgot the link and I don't suppose any of you 'Brights' have teh remotest idea what the 'Forlorn Hope' is:

Well, apart from the beer, food, fags, condoms, magic mushrooms (yes I know, I didn't tell you about them, but at least they were free), use of the car, free laundry, deposit for the rent (which you did get back, well, almost all of it anyway), what did my parents ever do for me?
It was that nice Mrs Thatcher, who somehow managed to run the state productively enough to get it all paid for AND turn in a surplus, and, the sponsorship I got from industry because the course I did actually had some pay back value i.e. wasn't some "social psychotherapy with applied basket weaving" bullshit, and, the work I did in the holidays under the sponsorship.
I actually left University in CREDIT!

The fact that you would even try to justify making fun of a kid who just had brain surgery proves you are a worthless piece of shit. If you fucking believe that's OK, I hope you rot in hell.
God forbid anyone stand up for their right to an education - fucking beat the lot of them, right asshole?

Interesting how irony has a habit of feeding on itself.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Alfie Meadows was in a band called "Dr. Bendy-Light & His Time Machine". See pic here - http://www.myspace.com/drbendylight/photos/22456585#%7B%22ImageId%22%3A22456585%7D - hover on the name "Alfie" in the text below the pic to see his face highlighted.
"Dr. Bendy-Light & His Time Machine" then reformed to become a band called "Organized Violence" - read the panel on the right hand side.
The "Organized Violence" MySpace site has an old piccie of Alfie Meadows - see here http://www.myspace.com/organisedviolence/ .
Now "Organized Violence" has its own web site - click the link on the MySpace site or click here to go direct - http://www.splurge.110mb.com/ .
Ooh, ouch, very nasty!
Well scroll down and click the link for the "Organized Violence" sistersite, called "Somethingmustbefucked" - or go direct here http://somethingmustbefucked.weebly.com .
Let's quote: -
"FuckFuckFuck SOmeThijng Must BE FUcked,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.RRRRRRrrrrrr Craniums Perhaps,.,.,. and NoT in a Visceral WAy eithererer,.,.,..,.,..,.,., BAng sSOmething Must BE penetrated"
Well there it is, as promised, that thing that only Americans struggle to understand.
Perhaps Alfie's cranium needed help a long time before a copper's truncheon forced the issue.
And I wonder, with a lyrical track record like that at such an early age, whether "sweet little Alfie" was really one of the forlorn hope's lambs to the slaughter, or actually one of its leaders?
No doubt the MSM will catch up some time soon. In the mean time, you heard it first at D&N.

So that's your idea of humour? No wonder they call you Duff.
"I was never bright enough to go to university."
Don't bother us with the obvious, duffer. The only thing you're bright enough for is leaving a trail of slime. QED.

Cheap and disrespectful overall, but at its most disappointing when you suggest that protest attendance and finding yourself near the police at said protest proves that you deserve what you get. Conflating a cowardly notion of 'common sense' (stay home if you know what's good for you) with moral deservedness of punishment is frankly a lower form of argument even than engaging in personal attacks against someone for the precise reason that they suffered a serious injury.
In your follow-up post you bring up the sacrifice of Cpl. Furguson of The 4th Rifles, who indeed offered a great sacrifice for his country. I found it slightly hypocritical, however, that you never suggest that he got what was coming to him for having placed himself in proximity to an Afghan IED.

Unsuprisingly, the duff cunt has no end of 'heroes' wank fantasies on his webshite. (God, how his type gets all misty and chubby 'down there' when they clock injured soldiers and dead Arabs).
This particular brand of scum seems to be babbling ever more loudly with our new government in charge ("Great! Now we can really make em suffer").
Hopefully, the skyrocketing crime rate lying ahead will shut him up the old fashioned way. Except no-one would care if teenagers even shit or pissed on his grave. A lot of us might even laugh in the cheap, nasty manner scum like Duff expect.
