Very interesting stuff. I think the UK just about beat the USA to the big idea expressed here. British academia and journalism were more comfortable with the idea of "cultural Marxism" courtesy of the Frankfurt school of social analysis. Conservative critics in the UK - notable Peter Hitchens - have been going an about the ex-Marxist elite who have been busy eroding our way of life, while pretending to run the BBC, education, Social Services, and major Quangoes.

It looks like the American conservatives have really taken this one to heart and have polished the ideas with great finesse. Whether it will have any effect, though, is another matter. As you rightly point out, some just don't want to see...

Well, on November the 7th we will find out and in the meantime, fingers crossed!

"this election in America is of monumental importance": that's what they always say. Evelyn Waugh got it right: the trouble with conservatives is that they never turn the clock back.

DM, you're trying too hard for that role as the detached, somewhat cynical observer offering bon mots from the sidelines! It mattered very much that Reagan beat Carter but since then, I agree, the results have not been crucial - until now. We have all seen what Obama and his apparat are up to and another four years will give them the chance to nail it down. Whilst I recognise your latent anti-Americanism do try and imagine a world in which the USA actually sides with China, Russia and Iran!

Probably a good thing I'm one of the few visitors to D&N who calls the American South home David.

Lumping "Leftist Activists" into the same generally, in agreement group, "Democrats" could, when you come to visit Arkansas - get you in more than a little trouble. Indeed, should you be including in your touring, each of the states of the South, take care (should I be with you) not to say any such thing.

While it is true Arkansas went more or less Republican in 2010, changing political affiliation in the South is akin to changing one's socks. Too, generally speaking, (and you can ask Paul Ryan's in-laws about this) proclaiming southern Democrats "are in league with Obama" is likely to get you tarred and feathered. An improvement over the long-johns and for damn sure the sarong I'd admit.

There is one quote I always keep in mind during our never-ending political campaigns, DM may be familiar with it:

“Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.”

I am well aware, JK, that southern Democrats are DINOs. If you are happy and relaxed at the thought of another four years of Obama-rule with him picking all the new Federal judges as well as passing control of the Supreme Court to extreme Leftists, then I will not attempt to awake you from your sleep-walking!

David. Are you sure the auld Reds under the Bed scare story will work against Obama. Maybe the Republicans need a new boogie man or perhaps even better a programme of progressive ideas to benefit the whole of the USA.
Personally I think Obama is solid and will continue fight the real and present Islamic fascist enemy.

"Personally I think Obama is solid and will continue fight the real and present Islamic fascist enemy"

Jimmy, do try and convince Netanyahu of that because I really don't think he believes it!

Also, read up the history of Saul Alinsky because he is Obama's guiding star. And it's not a question of "reds under the beds" but of reds out there in the open if only you, and the American public, would open your eyes!

Experience with Federal judges David, advises me the guys (and gals) of the robe can't, once "bought and purchased" be depended on to remain bought and purchased!

Justices Kennedy, Scalia, Breyer and more recently Roberts spring to mind. And that's just the current Court. Thomas and Ginsberg perhaps but there're a few conservatives I know who didn't take particularly kindly to Thomas' position on Eminent Domain.

I suppose like Mr. Romney it's just possible, those confirmed as Conservative Jurists to the bedrock, like the tectonic plates beneath their fundamental bedrock, heh, evolved.

I am kinda surprised that what used to take a few dozens of years at least, to head America off in slightly different course changes has, pretty doggoned miraculously been managed by Obama to have turned the US on a dime!

DM? Your comment of 13:04 brought to my radar screen another of those "timeless and trues":

“...the period which immediately precedes an election, and that during which the election is taking place, must always be considered as a national crisis. … As the election draws near, the activity of intrigue and the agitation of the populace increase; the citizens are divided into hostile camps, each of which assumes the name of its favorite candidate; the whole nation glows with feverish excitement. ...”

Just my personal opinion David, but it has been my experience also that while a first-term President must take steps to not dismay his original base - during a second term he can well say, To hell with everybody!

For instance, who said this and when?

"Any final status agreement must be reached between the two parties, and changes to the 1949 Armistice Lines (the pre-1967 borders) must be mutually agreed to. A viable two-state solution must ensure contiguity on the West Bank, and a state of scattered territories will not work. There must also be meaningful linkages between the West Bank and Gaza. This is the position of the United States today; it will be the position of the United States at the time of final status negotiations."

David. I am sure Obama and Netanyahu are fielding for the same team on the same cricket ground.
