Below I sketched the general outline of the Arab/Israeli problem and I have often wondered if there was a solution but "answer came there none"! Like Lewis Carrol's poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter" - and not forgetting what happened to all the little oysters! - the ultimate tragedy is embedded in the situation. Frankly, in the Israeli/Palestinian situation, tragedy is almost the only certain outcome because, of course, the political impasse is now concreted into solidity by outside powers with their own implacable imperatives.
Whilst I would dearly love to be rid of the whole festering problem, particularly as my own country played such a large role in setting it up, there is now no escaping it. The inexorable rise of Islamic militarism is a threat to us all, not just Israel. The only slight ray of light is that the Islamic side are now riven with the very worst type of divide - internal religious schism from which there is rarely any quick escape. So alas, both Israelis and Palestinians are trapped not only in their own fight to the death but also between that of the Sunnis and Shi-ites, and holding the ring and urging on all-comers are the so-called 'Great Powers'. Frankly, I think it is impossible to foresee anything other than a tragic outcome.
It is entirely right to beware the politician intending evil but, as this situation indicates, it is also very necessary to be exceedingly careful when a politician intends good!
