Anent a stishie below, David: the book to read is "Inventing the Flat Earth" by Jeffrey Burton Russell (Praeger, NY, 1991). The main inventor of the libel was the American writer Washington Irving. Such a large fraction of Americans' beliefs about their history is poppycock, why should this topic form an exception?

That font of all knowledge Wikipedia agrees with DM. But of course he also wrote about headless horseman and people sleeping for twenty years. What do you expect.
