It is not yet the 1st of November but even so the poppies have been flaunted for a week or more on the weaselly chests of the sort of politicians who should never be allowed to wear one even on the 11th. Like Christmas advertising, it gets earlier every year. Is there no sewer-depth to which these poltroons will not sink in a vain attempt to ingratiate themselves with the electorate - at minimal cost to themselves? I think a firing squad for one in three of the oily creeps would be a good idea.
But on the other hand, let's hear it for ... Philip Hollobone (Conservative, Kettering) ... the cheapest, in the best sense of that word, MP in the House of Commons. He only claimed £44,551 on his expenses because he employs no staff and answers all his constituents' letters personally. Anyway, he must be a good bloke because he's an ex-Para, so there! To give you an idea of his parsimony - with our money - the next biggest claimant was Dennis Skinner with £67,891. Say what you like about the mythical 'Beast of Bolsover', he's not a man to rip off the tax-payer for personal gain. Suckers, oops, sorry, I mean, voters in Dewsbury should note that their MP, Shahid Malik, put his hand out for £185,421, the highest of any MP and well above the average of £135,850.
Come the election, people of Dewsbury, you know what you must do!
