Lefties, and it must be admitted, other sillies, are in a terrible strop because the Oxford Union has invited a couple of Fascists to speak in a debate. According to the normally more sensible 'David T' of Harry's Place, "The poisonous, absurd, and thankfully marginal views of fascists are not within the boundaries of sensible, mainstream debate." That is patently untrue as I suspect a visit to any pub in the vicinity of Millwall football club would prove. Unfortunately, I fear 'David T.'s' definition of "sensible, mainstream debate" is likely to be more accurately described as 'refined and exclusive and as indulged in by intellectually, high-minded chaps like me', thus taking it to the point of being, dare I say, undemocratic in excluding the voice of the man in the Public Bar! Also, when it comes to "poisonous, absurd, and thankfully marginal views", I would include anything emanating from the Muslim Council of Britain, the SWP, 'Respect', the current British government, the legal profession, global warming fanatics, 'Green War', 'Enemies of the Earth', and so on, ad nauseum. Regretfully, I am forced to listen to them all for as long as it takes to reach the TV/radio 'do-flicker' and change channels. So, thanks, 'David T.', but I think I can cope with a couple of nutters from the extreme Right without swooning away.
