I suspect very little. In my daily experience of the little bastards they have no expectation of being caught or even reported in the first place.

To remove idiots like Fahey, elected local Sheriffs/Chief Constables, answerable to the local people not Whitehall. Policemen on the beat would have prevented the murder of Mr Newlove. We need tough policing and tough prisons, make the punishment fit the crime.

Your crucial bit is "had the late Mr. Newlove clipped the ear of one of these young vermin and lived to tell the tale, it would have been him up before the judge today, not his killers". Because that reminds us that all police excuses about not having the manpower are bollocks - they have manpower enough to persecute the honest citizen. As for hanging the criminal scum: I find it hard to guess whether that would be more effective than hanging the senior cadre of policemen. Wotchafink?

Clairwil - I think you under-estimate the publicity that surrounds an execution, and to paraphrase the good Doctor, 'a hanging in the morning concentrates the mind wonderfully'.

Jon - welcome to Duff & Nonsense. I am more and more inclined to the idea of elected chief constables *and* judges. I think the ground rules should insist that they cannot be sponsored in any way by any political party and that their election campaigns should be confined to their background and their recent professional histories on one piece of A4 paper paid for and distributed by local government. Elections should co-incide with parliamentary elections.

'DM' - don't tempt me!

"...suggesting that the drink-age limit be raised to 21!"

Because were it not for the demon drink, these little cherubs would have been safely at home, playing 'Scrabble' with their loving parents, I suppose...?

And I note that the CCTV footage released yesterday was filmed by a neighbour, not by CCTV supplied by the police/council for the purposes of gathering evidence to act. I wonder if that neighbour paid for it himself?

"As for hanging the criminal scum: I find it hard to guess whether that would be more effective than hanging the senior cadre of policemen."

Can we impliment a trial period where we do both? If no drop in crime rates, then hang just the criminals and re-evaluate.

Might as well be scientific about it ;)

Nah! Let's just keep hanging the chief coppers!

David

Let’s be constructive.

The chief constable puts on some civilian clothes that would have been given to the poor except they refused them. Pore enough drink the clothes on the to make good stink. Have him stagger down the street. Some of his constables follow in civilian clothes at a discrete distance and arrest the miscreants who attack their chief constable.

A judge. after verifing that the drink was on the Chief Constables clothes and not his breath and thus a impeccible witness, arranges for the miscreants to be long term guests of the prisons.

Repeat as necessary until the streets are safe.

Then when the Chief Constable supports politically correct things like a higher drinking age no one will dispute his credibility as a constable who is credit to police every where.

But that is to simple, the modern powers that be would never accept it. After all it would work.

'"had the late Mr. Newlove clipped the ear of one of these young vermin and lived to tell the tale, it would have been him up before the judge today, not his killers". Because that reminds us that all police excuses about not having the manpower are bollocks - they have manpower enough to persecute the honest citizen.'

Indeed, because the honest citizen will co-operate with the police and turn up for court. In other words they're less hassle.
