- My amateur effort to keep track of the murdered body count in this "scepter'd Isle" since July 3rd 2007, as the government and the liberals insist that crime figures are falling and there is no need to look again at sentencing policy.
In 1960 there were approximately 250 homicides a year. This year, in only 4 months we have already exceeded that total, and done it despite huge improvements in A&E that have saved many lives that would have been lost 40 years ago.
My sources are the BBC News sites which do not necessarily report every homicide on the main regional bulletins, so this is not an exhaustive list. For my purposes, men and women are 17+ years and children are 16- years.
TOTAL SINCE 3/7: 249 men: 82 women: 40 children:
CODES: EN= England, SC=Scotland, NI=Northern Island, WA=Wales.
This brings us to the end of 2007, and still the slaughter continues unabated and unremarked by the usual liberal suspects!

The Chicago Sun Times has always been left of left center and has opposed the death penalty for years. Which makes this http://www.suntimes.com/news/commentary/727792,CST-EDT-edit06a.article>editorial commentinteresting.
Almost eight years later, the moratorium is still in place, even though several new studies show the death penalty is a deterrent to murder. One, a study by professors at the University of Houston, found that Illinois' moratorium led to 150 additional homicides in our state over four years. Having capital punishment is hardly a deterrent if it isn't used. The 11 men on Death Row could very well die of natural causes before they are put to death.
Unfortunately they did not include a link.

Thanks for that, Hank, I will re-quote it in my next "Murder Inc." post. However, the chances of the death penalty coming back here is virtually nil (see my comments to the post above) not least because the EU would not stand for it. So, in the meantime, the truly innocent continue to die.
