- My amateur effort to keep track of the murdered body count in this "scepter'd Isle" since July 3rd 2007, as the government and the liberals insist that crime figures are falling and there is no need to look again at sentencing policy.
In 1960 there were approximately 250 homicides a year. This year, in only 4 months we have already exceeded that total, and done it despite huge improvements in A&E that have saved many lives that would have been lost 40 years ago.
My sources are the BBC News sites which do not necessarily report every homicide on the main regional bulletins, so this is not an exhaustive list. For my purposes, men and women are 17+ years and children are 16- years.
TOTAL SINCE 3/7: 275 men: 90 women: 46 children:
CODES: EN= England, SC=Scotland, NI=Northern Island, WA=Wales.
Well, a cracking start to a murderous New Year! Indeed, celebrating New Year should come with a government health warning.

This case where the copper charged with murder was let out on bail to do it again - what can one say? He had weapons training and had a gun. Some might feel that the judge who let him out... oh, what's the point? Some tit will say that only those who have never made a mistake...blah, blah, blah.

I know, 'DM', I know, but I am perpetually amazed as I trawl through the BBC news reports how many men charged with murder are set free on bail conditions. Quite apart from allowing anyone on the street who, 'prima facie', appears to have slaughtered another person, how on earth will the witnesses for the prosecution feel? Nervous, I suspect!

'DM' - one further thing apropos your comment in another thread. It now looks as though that Asian girl was murdered but on checking it appears she was killed outside my dates of reference.
