Each day brings news of ever more lay-offs and job cuts. A few hundred here, a thousand there, several thousand everywhere, but have you noticed that they are all in the private sector? Where are the statistics showing the slimming down, or better still, the closure of all those useless quangos, a purge of jobs in our Town Halls, a ruthless axe being taken to our bloated Nationalised Health Service and a long-overdue purge of Education Departments? Putting several hundred thousand of these people on the dole might seem expensive but it's cheaper than paying them - and think of the savings on their gold-plated pensions! And the clincher is that The Guardian might go broke without all those pages of adverts for one-legged, lesbian, dwarf outreach-counsellors.
That's a good point.
