I am very grateful to SoD (Son of Duff) for adding film clips to my, er, reportage (see below) of the Battle of Waterloo taken from the film of that name. My sophisticated and intelligent readers will need no reminder that the film was, from a historical viewpoint, seriously innacurate in many respects but none of that detracts from the enjoyment of watching it because it does tell the essential truth of the matter. Every historian who has ever sat through Shakespeare's 'Henries' will have shuddered at the disgraceful assault on historical facts, but they will all have been thrilled at the deeper truths that Shakespeare revealed on his stage. I am not suggesting that the film is on a level with Shakespeare's plays but it was certainly an honourable and thrilling evocation of the events of those four critical days, and I urge you all to have a look at the clips Lawrence provided in the comments boxes to each post.
