Finally it is over for my e-pal, Alan Sullivan. He certainly fought the good fight but in the end the cancer got him - and at far too early an age. He was, as I put it in my note of condolence on his site, "an extra-ordinary man". Homosexual but politically conservative, warm-hearted and generous but also abrasive and waspish, but above all, as his long fight against his illness proved, he was a courageous man. He viewed the dread facts of the matter calmly and determined to use the best that medical science could offer to prolong his life but understood and accepted that in the end death always wins. His deep religious beliefs acted as a balm and as a rod of strength upon which to lean throughout his ordeal. I shall miss him and his unique blog site.
A wonderful tribute.
I will miss him too.
But thanks to Alan, I found your site.

I started reading Alan because of your blog, (taking the reverse route of Andis, I guess) He was always an interesting read. I can't imagine how he suffered, but like you, I'm glad it's over.

Indeed, gentlemen, he was a fascinating man, not just in what he wrote but in what he was. Can't believe that it's Monday morning and I'm not immediately clicking onto 'Fresh Bilge'.
