In the words of my hero, or as some might put it, my alter ego, Victor Meldrew*, "I don't believe it!" According to a breaking news story, some Cocklecarrot has decreed that Peter Sutcliffe, a.k.a. the Yorkshire ripper, will never be released. Of course, that means he is going to spend the rest of his worthless life living in great comfort in Broadmoor at my expense when he should have been hung by the neck years ago but still, one must be grateful for small mercies, they being something which Sutcliffe never granted his 13 victims. I read somewhere that the psycho-babblers insist that he's made 'real progress' in dealing with his mental illness so perhaps now is the time to take them at their word and release him back into the prison system instead of Broadmoor. I'm sure his fellow inmates will give him a warm reception!

ADDITIONAL: I wrote too soon! According to The Mail the devilish sting is in the small print detail of the judgment:
The Yorkshire Ripper could be released from Broadmoor to a less secure unit after doctors reported a dramatic improvement in his mental health.
A tribunal judge has ruled that Peter Sutcliffe, 63, should be moved to 'conditions of lesser security', where he could even be eligible for day release.
Apparently there is a medium secure unit near Wakefield, not far from Sutcliffe's old haunts, so that'll be nice and comforting for all you Yorkies, not least because prisoners are allowed out on day release! The final decision on day release for any particular prisoner rests with Alan Clarke, the man who has already announced his intention of releasing as many criminals as he can. One final thought occurs. When the psycho-babblers say that a multiple murderer should be allowed out, shouldn't it be part of the deal that the prisoner stays with the psycho-babbler and his family first?
