I am obliged, again, to my e-pal, JK, who sent me the following link:
In it, Hugh White takes a long, hard, cool look at Australia's grand strategic priorities in a region which hitherto, or at least since 1945, has, by and large, flourished under Pax Americana. The rise and rise of China combined with the apparent decline of the USA requires Australia's leaders to shake off their lethargy and undertake some serious thinking. I emphasise the 'apparent' decline of America because it is a remarkable country and a decade or two of uninhibited capitalism would quickly restore it to its previous pre-eminence. However, were I Australian (which thank the Lord I'm not, sir!) I would not rely on it. I will not attempt to paraphrase White's arguments but instead urge you to read it in full. Similar thinking is required 'over here' but I see no signs of it - so no change there, then!
