And happily, when it comes to political matters 'over there', I have one in the delectable form of MDA (My Darling Ann). In her end of year post (a 'must read') she makes up my mind for me on the subject of who to support in the Republican nomination contest. It has been a long and fascinating and exceedingly worthwhile campaign. Some might complain that it has been too long but it takes time to tease out something of the reality lurking behind the slick PR machines which cloak the candidates' reality. The rocket-like climb of Herman Cain followed by his equally empty rocket-like descent stands as a tribute to American democracy in the modern age. Personally, I had no objections to his affairs but his apparent surprise when they were raked up for all to gawp at spoke of an unsophisticated ignorance of political life in the rough and tumble of a nomination contest. Likewise, others had their moments centre stage but all fluffed their lines. The only one smooth enough and adept enough to duck and dive his way through the 'incoming' whilst remaining calm and collected - as well as impeccably dressed - was Mitt Romney. I must admit that in my heart I wanted a more ideological candidate, a man or woman I feel could be trusted to drive through the counter-progressive programme desperately needed to undo the worst efffects of the Obama 'Comintern'. I'm still not sure of Romney whose demeanor deserves the appellation of 'Slick Mitt'! But here, MDA comes to the rescue of my confused and doubting muddle of a mind.
She cuts to the very heart of the matter by suggesting that there are only two matters of absolutely crucial importance for a new Republican president to do in his or her first term. First, repeal Obama-care and, second, stamp on illegal immigration by the use of the 'E-verify' technique. For the benefit of my readers 'over here', this is an existing programme in which an employer can easily and quickly verify that a job applicant's social security number is legal and correct. It is not only the Left-wing liberals who hate the thought of making E-verify checks mandatory but also the business world who love illegal immigrants who can be hired cheaply and without benefits. MDA explains why illegal immigration absolutely must be tackled head on by pointing to California:
Massive legal and illegal immigration has already so changed the California electorate that no Republican can be elected statewide anymore. Not so long ago, this was a state that produced great Republican governors and senators like Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, S.I. Hayakawa and Pete Wilson.
If even Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman, two bright, attractive, successful female business executives -- one pro-life and one pro-choice -- can't win a statewide election in California spending millions of their own dollars in the middle of the 2010 Republican sweep, it's buenas noches, muchachos.
And yet, almost all Republican presidential candidates support some form of amnesty for illegals in order to appeal to the business lobby.
Only Bachman and Romney have come out in support of mandatory E-verify, and Romney actually stated that Obama's illegal immigrant uncle caught drunk-driving recently should be deported! On Obama-care, all the Republican candidates have promised to repeal it and so, as MDA shrewdly points out, it comes down to a choice as to who is the most likely to win against Obama. According to her, it's a no-brainer, it must be Romney. Am I going to give Ann Coulter an argument? Not bloody likely!
