A few days ago I wrote an enthusiastic publicity piece for the Russian pantomime season which was due to open with everyone's favourite stage villain playing the role of Czar Putinplaceforever but alas, the house was less than half full on opening night and ever since the audience has not just booed and hissed each appearance of Czar Putinplaceforever in the traditional manner of a panto audience but they have actually meant it and followed up with demonstrations outside the theatre every night! I am told that 'Vlad the Bad' Putin who plays the role is mightily displeased, and little Dmitri Medvedev who plays Principle Boy has burst into tears and refuses to go on. Where can it end? Oh no, they're not going to turn it into a Chekhov? Tell me it ain't so!
I think your piece might have gone viral in Russia and scuppered their chances. Apparently the Russians had never before seen their leaders in such sexually ambivalent poses, and we know that they like their leaders to be real men.
So give yourself a pat on the back for furthering the cause of liberty, and hope that Putin can see the funny side. Please make sure SoD has your password to the blog, just in case you meet with an unfortunate accident or something.

Alas, I don't think that Putin has ever seen the funny side of anything!

Maybe Dostoyevsky could write the novelisation. Crime and Punishment certainly fits as does The Idiot but The Brothers Rippemallov may yet get their come uppance.

Where can it end?
I hear the EU has a recent vacency. :- )

Whatever, Kevin, it will be desperately long and desperately miserable like most things Russian!
Hank - jest not! One of Merkel's aims is to inveigle Russia into the EU in one form or another. Remember, whilst we tend to keep glancing west, germany always looks east!
