In a reply to my e-pal, AK, in the comments to the preceeding post I suggested that Mrs. Merkel had taken leave of her senses. My remark was prompted by her mad and panicked decision to close down all of Germany's nuclear power stations - see below. However, that was followed by an even more bizarre suggestion when she promised recently to campaign in France on behalf of the 'Hungarian dwarf'! If you are not sure what to think of that quite extraordinary idea just ask yourself how you would feel if she comes over here in three years time and campaigns for 'Dim Dave'? Yeeees, quite!
Needless to say, this lunatic idea has played right into the hands of the socialist candidate, Francois Hollande, who already has a very healthy lead in the polls. I cannot believe that an intervention by a German Chancellor is going to do anything but sink what lingering hopes little Sarkozy might still have. Also, needless to say, this has given the go-ahead to the leader of the German Socialists to offer support to their Bothers and Sisters in France.
Personally, I am all in favour of Merkel doing whatever she feels necessary to make a French socialist victory even more certain than it already is. As Der Spiegel points out quoting from Right-wing newspaper Die Welt:
The Socialist candidate, Francois Hollande, feels it is his calling to turn back the leftist clock to the 1970s and he is confusing the voters with all manner of campaign promises -- promises that are contrary to all economic reason.... Hollande's 60 Point Program is like a best-of list of left-wing populism. The French in the future are to be allowed once again to retire at age 60, taxes are to be raised broadly, the public sector enlarged, financial markets regulated and the banks broken apart. Given this retro-socialism, it isn't surprising at all that he wants to repeal the fiscal pact and introduce euro bonds -- and of course use the European Central Bank as a money-printing machine. Hollande's victory would be the end of Franco-German leadership in Europe. [My emphasis]
So not all bad news, then! A radical socialist government in Paris turning the clock back 40 years and coming on top of the already trembling foundations of the euro should result in an almighty crash-bang-wallop. Oh dear, what a pity, never mind!
Still, I am sure 'Dim Dave' and those shrewd young men in the FO with their Third Class degrees from Cleethorpes Polyversity are already planning several devious ways in which Britain can either take advantage, or prepare to jump ship. Er, they are, aren't they? Oh come on, of course they are ... I mean, they must be ... surely!
Once the Kraut-Frog axis has been snapped, the UK can safely leave the EU.

Well, with raving Marxists running France I think even Germany would want out!
