I agree, Heather's Fall of the Roman Empire is excellent.

For your readers who do not want lose to much time that could be spent reading Duff and Nonsense a good review of the book.

I can't help thinking the second oldest and the first aren't really that dissimilar...

Perhaps the Romans learned from the Greeks and the Greeks from the Egyptians. Consider old Ramesses II who went to beat up the Hittites at Kadesh in about 1275BC. He got whacked and returned home to declare 'mission accomplished' (in stone not on CNN). His generals did not disagree with him. As you say little changes.

Have a heart, Roger, I'm only just struggling through Roman history. But, of course, you are entirely right, plus ca change and all that!
