Some time back I clicked on the wrong 'thingie' and suddenly all my entries under 'Blog Favs' disappeared. Being an indiscriminate fellow I can tell you the list was fairly long but 'I was shocked, shocked I tell you', to discover how of few my 'favourite things' I could remember. Fortunately, some of them were listed on my side-bar so that helped, and bit by bit, out of the blue, my memory would suddenly engage and I would recall, with a little cheer, another forgotten name. This morning was another 'eureka' moment when I suddenly thought of Donald Pittenger and his superb site Art Contrarian. Mr. Pittenger writes about art regularly and as you know I write about art occasionally but the main difference between us is that he knows where-of he's writing where-as . . . well, yes, quite! Anyway, it was a joy to rediscover him and, generous fellow that I am, I am going to provide you with one illustration per blog post from his site as it stands today. You should go over to him for intelligent and perceptive commentary:
Advanced Dressing Station by Henry Tonks (1862-1937) - but read the post and see a very different set of paintings by Tonks.
Les Perruches, c.1925, by Jean Dupas (1882-1964). Art Deco doesn't get much more 'Deco' than that!
You know who by Norman Rockwell. Mr. Pettinger provides various examples of Kennedy portraiture but I think Rockwell's is the best. He shows those rather unflattering 'chipmunk' jowels better than the others.
Bali Scene c. 1933 by Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957). I put this one in especially for my e-pal, Andra, who is a Bali-lover, or should that be a lover of Bali?
Phantom Corsair prototype - 1938. Mr. Pettinger has a weakness for vintage cars and planes.
Winthrop Stark Davis (1885-1950) and his illustration from the days when top artists were used to produce elegant advertising.
Leo Tolstoy, none of whose books I have ever read and from the bits and pieces I have read about him my desire to do so has dwindled! But Mr. Pettinger offers up a range of paintings of 'the great man'.
So pop over to the Art Contrarian and be amused and educated and delighted and excited - which is more than you will be here!
Many thanks - I will save tyhis site when I get home.
Never heard of Tonks before but he is really good. Talk about adaptable! I can see why you might like him. Sexy posh women in lovely dresses is a theme of yours.
And I'm very glad you are happy to share it!
