David, I told my charming children, that this is a benevolent dictatorship in my home, but that's subject to change if they don't behave. Glad mine are grown-up - I'd end up in jail for sure nowadays, because I like rules and an orderly lifestyle.

Dear Liberty, you may feel free to discipline me at any time, er, in the nicest possible way, of course!

Andra does it all the time!

There are times when even the mildest among us must think fondly of piano wire and lamp posts.

Bring back corporal punishment in the schools, I say. Anything to try to repel the foaming tide of sentimental saccharin drivel about children.

You're the sort of bloke, DM, that the 'likkle kiddie-winkies' boo at the Panto!

But DM is right anyway.
And furthermore, do they still have Pantos?

There is something (more? I didn't appreciate fully - at the time) to DM's comment.

A little more than a decade ago I found myself "involved" in a college class which included some few 20ish years old females - nope DD, they all had 'likkle kiddie-winkies' immediately after class and so - simply; that would not do.

Anyway, I'd recently found myself getting asked by a former U-2 pilot to come in and give "talks" - likely such as your's on Napoleonic battle formations - but during the Q&A set aside at the end I got some personal (to me anyway given how I was instructed in deferring to Teacher ... anyway, many of the lasses asked what I could not possibly answer indeed couldn't even explain to myself how Arkansas could possibly have come to that since the decades I'd left.

Sample question/observance:

How is it I can pull my sidearm - possibly shoot - some guy for not fully complying with what I demand but cannot swat my kid on the butt at the grocery store after telling (the kid) not to eat the produce?

At the time I thought the girl was joshing me and replied "to that effect."

Soon thereafter I got an invitation to enjoy "a little talk" with that institution's Board of Governors.

Nowadays - I "mail it in."

It's a different world all over the place apparently.

Ah now I've taken notice of LB's comment above - don't know how it is in the UK but I'll be willing to wager - LB knows this sort of US scenario better than I.

Corporal punishment? So we are going to set Duffers on them after all he was a Corporal?

Andra, yes, indeed, we still have pantos and by and large the amateur ones are better than the pros, the latter these days being merely vehicles for 'slebs'.

JK, I would pay good money to watch you giving a talk to the prime of Arkie womanhood!

Very witty, AussiaD!

AK, sorry, TypePad took against you again and I failed to notice until this morning. As to your comment, I have the lamppost if you can provide the piano wire!

One of the things I HATE with every fibre in my being is the intrusive nature of the British Government which now seems determined to meddle in every single aspect of our lives. The process was started by Blair, continued by Brown and the steamroller is now gaining momentum under Cameron, the heir to Blair.

As a voter, I find myself completely disenfranchised. There is no dividing line any more between Labour and Tory, most of our laws come from unelected bureaucrats in Europe and in consequence my vote counts for absolutely nothing. Whoever we vote for, we get an identikit socialist figurehead government.

And now this. Robert Buckland's proposed bill is the most tyrannical, illiberal piece of legislation that any politician in Great Britain has ever proposed. If you give those who are in authority over us added powers, they will ALWAYS, ALWAYS abuse them and should this bill receive the royal assent, I foresee it being used as a weapon to prosecute ANYONE who doesn't tick the correct liberal and socialist boxes.

For over ten years, I felt that I was being squeezed out of my beloved country. In the end, denied a vote worth the name, I ended up voting with my feet, here I am in Russia and currently I do not propose to return to Great Britain except as a visitor.

Russia certainly has its faults. We have been hearing much recently about the corrupt nature of its government and its contempt for democracy. All this is true, but the paradox is that the Russian State interferes FAR FAR LESS in my life than the British state ever did. Also, believe it or not, I have FAR FAR MORE freedom of speech. Liberal sacred cows do not exist here. I am a little person, and like all the little people, no-one really cares what I say. If I was to rock the boat like Sergei Magnitsky and upset those in authority, that would be another matter entirely, but not being cast in the same heroic stamp, I am not about to do that.

I remain (believe it or not) a loyal British citizen. The oath I took to her Majesty is (as far as I am concerned) for life, but my contempt for those who govern us now knows no bounds. The 'fairest isle' I knew as a child is now completely unrecognisable. The socialist cancer has taken hold too deeply and I'm very much afraid that the process of deterioration is now unstoppable.

Richard, that long - and impassioned - comment deserves a more well thought-out response than a quick counter-comment. It ties in with my disagreement with Lawrence in another comment thread and so I intend to try and compose a post to convince you that you are both wrong. I know, I know, fat chance!
