You have to remember that the US Press are a bunch of lickspittles who'll always abase themselves to presidential power. The press in the Hague might do the same, but O doesn't represent power over them - probably he represents a mountain of hypocrisy on privacy etc.

DM, you're reading this in the American press.

Is it common to clap at the end of a press-conference in Europe? Because it isn't here. We clap for a speech, like the Germans did when Obama first went there, but never for a press-conference.

I don't like Obama, but I think this is just the press making up a story.

I've seen video of White House press conferences. The swine applaud. Stomach-churning stuff.

My favourite inadvertent joke of the week, from an American blogger.
"Our Navy is now under 300 warships and sinking."

I wish, DM, that we had 300-odd warships to joke about!

enough of this superficial stuff: it's a gorgeous Spring day and i'm sunbathing in my shorts while fannying with my laptop. Yippee!

In your shorts!!! Oh no, please, DM, I beg of you, no 'selfies'!

What is "fannying"?
Sounds a bit obscene, but not in Scotland, surely?

If you don't mind, Andra, I will leave DM to do the linguistic explanations,

Well, I have a picture of DM lifting his kilt and waving his dangly bits about at the passing parade.
Frankly, I don't like it one little bit and I definitely don't want to see a "selfie".

It was sunny enough today that my wife was drying clothes and bed linen on the line. It's striking how much nicer they are than when dried in the tumble dryer.

Is that the explanation?
If so, I'm afraid it hasn't helped.

"while fannying with my laptop"

Thank you DM - my 'puter screen now has little droplets of Stout all over it.

I observed some interesting occurrences whilst with HM's finest but never with a laptop. The mind boggles.

I'm still missing something here.
AussieD - do you know what fannying is? Are you doing it now? Do I want to see it?
Oh, to hell with it. I'm going to have something to eat and go to bed, perchance to dream.
Night, night!
