Glad we never had to use very much of these deadly beauties vs the USSR. But that is why they were built---to keep from having to use them.

Duffers - did you ever see that marvellous documentary about the Vulcan mission to bomb the airfield at Port Stanley to deny its use to the Argies?

Send shivers down my spine just writing that - absolutely brilliant stuff.

I spent six years down the back of the Vulcan - a member of the mushroom club - kept in the dark and covered in xxxx. I didn't want to fly on them and I was glad to leave. It took six months for my permanent backache and sore bum to fade away....

How about a war story? Flying out of Cyprus, the first pilot (& captain) was taken short. He managed to get out of his ejector seat and down into the cabin with us rear crew. He then proceeded to crap into a plastic bag. The sight and the awful smell will remain with me always.

They may well have done, but that's not the point at all... the point is it was a magnificent piece of good old-fashioned British-style derring do.

David I am over at the Somme and when you see those continuous cemeteries then that is good reason to have kept the Vulcan and the detterent. Thank God we did not have to go to war again on the Rhine.

Fit for purpose? The Vulcan, like the Victor and Valiant, was designed for high level bombing. Then the naughty Russians shot down Gary Powers in his U-2, allegedly flying above danger. Big re-think and the Vulcan etc became really marvellous low level bombers. The price for this change was accelerating deterioration in the airframes. First to go was the Valiant. When the Vulcan bombed the airfield in the Falklands it attacked at medium level, too dangerous at the low level the Vulcan squadrons had been training for 20 years or more. It also bombed on a diagonal to the runway because the runway wasn't very wide. It wasn't very comfortable down the back, but I went to some interesting places!

When we lived in Lincolnshire in the early 80s they were a common (and rather wonderful) sight. I remember particularly that on takeoff they gave out huge clouds of black smoke - rather like a clapped out diesel when you put your foot down. Friends who lived closer to Coningsby even claimed that this smoke included sizeable bits of black "coke" that presumably dislodged from deposits at the rear of the engine somewhere and were locally known as "Vulcan shit.

Down on the flat near Saltfleetby we we also got a lot of A10s (Warthogs) doing low level bombing and gun practise on the coastal range there. On one occasion I was looking DOWN from the bedroom window of our isolated 2 story house into the cockpit of an A10 - near enough to see the whites of the pilots eyes...
