I have confessed before about my abysmal ignorance of most things African and especially South African. From this distance, and with my appalling lack of knowledge, it would simply be idiotic for me to comment on their affairs - and yes, you're right, it hasn't stopped me on other subjects, thank you for reminding me! Even so, I do detect some signs of hope emanating from South Africa. I thought the 'due process' that eventually dealt with Oscar Pistorius was admirable. However, the real test - which has still to reach a conclusion - has been the on-going legal action against their own President, Jacob Zuma, who faces 783 - yes, 783! - charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering.
According to The Telegraph, prior to the presidential election in 2009 the prosecutors dropped all charges against him and he was thus able to win election. Now, however, Mr Justice Aubrey Ledwaba of the Pretoria High Court has laid into the prosecutors for their "misguided" and "inexplicable" action and has re-instated the legal process against the President. Well, good luck with that one, Aubrey, old chap but if I were you I would have a care crossing the road in the near future!
I regret to say that I know little about South Africa other than they have produced some fine golfers.
