I remember being a "marshal", or whatever, at the Garter Ceremony in Windsor.

They used the oiks from my old state grammar school for the job of getting marshals to line the route, it being presumably below the status of the Eton boys from the other side of the bridge to do the job.

My allotted point was just round a corner, and I'd just finished ushering the tourists and onlookers behind the dainty little ropes at the edge of the road, when I drifted off a bit. Suddenly this glum looking lady and gent appeared in the road, no more than 5-10 feet from me. I went to retrieve them back to the pavement when my mate grabbed me and said "WTF are you doing?!"

I looked back and it was his and her Maj, with him giving me a fearsome grin and her a girly giggle! The rest of the procession came from round the corner and followed behind them. I flushed red as a beetroot and the crowd chuckled.

Well at least I cheered them up a little!

And I seem to remember you and your mate Bill Tree were on another ceremony where her Maj was present in her younger days.

Bill got a slap from your Mum after the parade for answering Gran's question as to what he thought of her Maj with whatever was the 1950's equivalent of "Yeah, I would"!

Times may change, but peeps stay the same.

Oh no. Please, no.

"Brexit - The Movie: Return of the Country Bumpkins"

- starring Nigel Farage ...

If that happens I'll throw in the towel, coz I won't be able to take it any more.

SoD - Awww, what a shame. Not another Remoaner moaning again!

With Charles on the bench I wish her well too.

I'm against people dying - too much of it going on lately.

Andra, apparently 2017 arrived okay there?

2017 is alive and so far well in the Land Down Under.

Rather fond of HM. She was my ultimate boss for 34 years. When the inevitable happens we, the Constitutional Monarchies of the Commonwealth, should just skip Charlie and go straight to Will.

Seems only yesterday that I and another bunch of fresh faced boys were standing holding a Bible and repeating, "I swear that I will well and truly serve Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her Heirs and Successors according to law and that I will resist her enemies and faithfully discharge my duty according to law. SO HELP ME GOD!" See I still remember it and it was fifty eight years ago.

Happy New Year all from Bonnie Scotland. I jimmy glesga swear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd her heirs and successors and officers set over me.

Since you took that oath, which includes the phrase, "Her Heirs and Successors according to law", you can't choose to "just skip Charlie and go straight to Will", since you are a law-abiding kind of guy, I presume.

In any case, though the New Year won't reach California for another few hours, I wish everyone at D & N a happy and healthy 2017.

13 more minutes before the entrance of the new year here in the central zone. A happy and blissful 2017 to y'all.

Hi Whiters, yes, the new year duly lobbed whether we were ready or not. In Queensland we had ours an hour earlier than New South Wales, Victoria, etc. because we have all the sun we need and don't want any of that daylight saving nonsense.
It's 4.30 pm on Sunday 1st. and nothing much has happened so far but I'm sure things will occur eventually.
And I do hope HM is improving. She is a national treasure.

Andra is partly right. They bring in the New Year one hour ahead of the other Eastern States as they are still GMT +10 so are correct in that sense. However Queensland did not agree to Daylight Saving as the wife of one of their former Premiers thought the extra hour of sunlight would fade the curtains more.

TBH - fortunately I am retired and now too old to be recalled so the dilemma does not exist re my oath of office. But I guess you are right if I was still young enough I'd serve Charles III just as I have his mum. It is more the concept rather than the person.

Only nineteen days to go "cousins" and you are shot of probably your worst President ever.

Time for a cold beer.

Happy New Year everybody.

Indiana also remained on regular time, not using daylight savings time.

Yup, nineteen days and counting.

I do understand what you mean (and I agree with the sentiment concerning the man who wanted to be his lover's tampon). I also do not wish to belabor the point. I will leave you with the following thought, however, which does not admit to a man's retirement status:

"An Englishman's word is his bond." According to "A Concise Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs" by John Simpson and Jennifer Speake (Oxford University Press, Oxford and New York, 1998), that expression dates back to 1500, "Lancelot of the Lake."

Happy New Year and Shalom.

TheBigHenry, I am sure Charlie will do a good job provided his wife keeps him in line.

My own wife keeps me in line (most of the time), so I guess it's reasonable to expect it from Charlie's wife, too. I hasten to add, however, that I am not always a prince among men (as it were).

From what I have heard, she is quite nice, too.(Charlie's wife.) I must admit, the People's Princess did not show much promise in that line.
