I am obliged - yet again! - to The American Thinker site, in general, and to Ms. Monica Showalter, in particular, for spotting that the second-rate 'artist' who painted the second-rate President gave him a lousy hand-job at the same time:
He was probably too busy photo-copying all that green foliage in the background to actually pay attention and execute a proper recreation of the presidential hand. Back to Art 'Skool' for him, methinks!
Comparisons are odious but...

Subtle symbolism. His whole presidency was one long hand-job.

Various critics have also noticed Mrs. Obama's painting looks nothing like her. At the risk of spoiling the fun, the two pieces just unveiled are official portraits, but they won't be the only ones. Other presidents have unusual official portraits and sculptures, including these of Ford and Bush I:

There are conventional, formal official portraits of all the presidents eventually.

I wonder why the wedding ring is on the wrong finger.

There is a scurrilous rumor that the painting was traced over a projected photo where the image was reversed.
