Of course, you will never totally separate the appointment of judges from politics but, dammit, you can at least put up a show of it! Alas, not in Wisconsin, USA where all discretion has been dumped and two candidates for an election to the State's Supreme Court have openly campaigned on Left-wing political platforms. Their disgraceful and disgusting behaviours have sunk even further into the detritus with the news that their political campaigns will be supported by both 'Obamarama' himself and his corrupt former Attorney General, Eric Holder.
Of course, the Democrat party was "shocked, I tell you, shocked" when, a few years back a Republican had the cheek to win the election for Governor. He, very promptly, passed a law that forbad public employee Trade Unions from having a privileged role in pay negotiations. Several legal attempts were made to overthrow this but one by one they failed even in the State's Supreme Court. This has rankled in Left-wing circles and now they attempting change it via the back door to the Supreme Court.
The fact that the ex-President and his former glove-puppet should join in tells you all you need to know concerning the state of the American (non)justice system. It stinks!
David, no one in the US is shocked about partisan judges:

Exactly so, Bob, and you should all be ashamed!

The GOP figured out that in any war, you find the funding mechanism for the enemy and cut it off.

As we have seen again and again, the judiciary has emerged as supreme among the three branches of government. We should hardly be surprised to see it be the object of bitter factional struggle: the insuperable power it wields, combined with the ever-increasing reach of government into every aspect of life, makes it a glittering prize.

Which is why, Malcolm, despite his peculiarities, I am so thankful for Trump particularly as rumours of resignation by Justice Kennedy from the Supreme Court start to proliferate.

Not as thankful as I am! Hardly a day goes by that I don't remember -- with a frisson of horror followed by a warm flush of gratitude -- that Hillary Clinton might so easily have become president. It still amazes me that it didn't happen.

"The horror, oh, the horror"!
