Let no-one cast aspersions on the forecasting abilities of this distinguished blog, oh dear me, no! Several times in the recent past I have forecast that the main threat to Brussels/Berlin would come from Italy. And, no, I can't find those forecasts - simply too, too time consuming! - and anyway, I leave that sort of thing to my Chief Archivist, a splendid chap, er, so long as he hasn't been out with Barney Magroo!
Next month, Italy enjoys an election and, according to Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in The Telegraph, the polls are indicating a collapse of the socialist government and a win by the anti-EU group of parties. Of course, Italy being Italy, none of them can quite agree on a combined policy but if they do gain power then you can expect some severe head explosions in Brussels/Berlin because they are all intent on defying EU rules and regs!
Can't wait!
A meltdown by the socialists is long overdue.
And now the M5S seem to have gone mainstream looks to me as though Salvini, Berlusconi and whatsername pf Frattelli di Italia have a good chance.
They are the only ones who seem to recognise that the man on the Milano omnibus is fed up of having for example his already meagre pension rights (say 800 euros a month) put back another year so that another 100000 african lads can spend all day riding around on bicycles or drinking beer in parks while being fed housed and given the thick end of 1000 euros.
