One hypothesis was that when he was asked a question, he used the screen in front of him to Google the answer.

If he was born that way he wouldn't have turned out to be the genius that he was so as thought experiments go its pretty much with the rest as simply opinion.

Some of the most politically interesting coverage of Hawking was done by the US right wing financial outlet 'Investor's Business Daily', which used him as a warning against the evils of Obama's "socialized medicine":

"People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the UK, where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless."

After being informed that Hawking was British the paper scrubbed the story. The quote is from a secondary source, of which there are many.
