Coral Sea was at the start of it a "can we actually" battle against the Japanese Navy after the pounding at Pearl Harbor. We learned we could and from then on the Pacific war became what most would refer to as a gut busting Navy war. At least that is what my Dad and his group called it.

Coral Sea was notable for another reason.

If I remember correctly, and JK will tell us I didn't, Coral Sea was the US Navies first general fleet engagement on the high seas.

Manila Bay, Santiago Bay and lake Erie were not on the high seas, and the "Bonne Homme Richard" was a single ship engagement.
