So the director does the histrionic equivalent of what a conductor does, but without the advantage of a pointy stick with which to defend himself from the artists if needs be.

No, Bob, histrionics is not required. Like good Generalship, it requires much study, careful planning and a dollop of luck! No "pointy stick" is required, only a pointy finger with which, if absolutely necessary, you can point to the exit if some actor really pisses you ofF!
