There's some incredibly clever and subtle diplomatic signalling going on here from Putin. He's saying: "We're a bunch of incompetent clowns who embarrassed ourselves in a botched operation. Our country is bankrupt and I can't control or find out what's going on, but then again, I don't really care. And your country is also pretty hopeless and your security services are just as incompetent as ours. But you can't arrest these blokes, and the days of subtly competent espionage are long gone, so I'll talk tough and you can just go and screw yourselves!"

Putin knows what he's doing. He knows he's talking a load of bollocks. He knows our government knows he's talking a load of bollocks, but he's also challenging them to prove it. That's why he was smiling when being interviewed about it. He claims the two men are civilians. The Soviets, sorry, the Russians, have intelligence agents who are not in the military and are, therefore, civilians. By refusing their extradition to the UK, or anywhere else, he knows that nothing more will happen. Toy for tat measures won't work and could start a shooting war, plus Putin has control of a tap to a very large oil pipeline, as well as refusing other countries access to the ISS as Russian rockets are used. What the answer is, I have no idea, apart from refusing him renewing his collection of Judy Garland records when the old ones wear out.

So many mass murderers and assassins in the world but they're not killing the right people.
