I picked up this obit as I cruised The Telegraph and the name, sort of, rang some dim bells in that yawning chasm that is my memory. As I have mentioned before, in my 40s I drifted into philosophy. Alas, I did no more than paddle in the (very) shallow end because I lacked both the time and the brain to cope with the deep end! At about the same time, I also became fascinated with Darwinian theory which, of course, has enormous philosophical ramifications. It took that rather silly man, Richard Dawkins, to pick up the Darwinian 'ball' and attempt to kick his 'Selfish Gene' nonsense over the bar to score a goal. Alas for him, amongst his very many intelligent critics was Mary Midgely who applied some much needed corrections to his theory - good for her!
I am severely tempted to buy one of her books but I dare not, my Kindle, already full to bursting, might explode! Anyway, farewell to an exceedingly intelligent lady.
