Sorry and all that but when I become enthused there is no stopping me! I have now finished the book I mentioned previously, The Spy and the Traitor by Ben MacIntyre. It is enthralling, more exciting than any fictional spy story, not least because it is true. Surely someone has to make a film of it, although I fear the worst if it is Hollywood who do it. Actually, thinking about it, a TV series would be best because you could have, say, ten one-hour episodes to bring out the nuanced details of which there are many.
It tells the story of Oleg Gordievsky, the Soviet KGB man who rose to become the top KGB man in Britain. Early in life he grew to detest the Soviet system which had seized his country and strangled the good out of it. Secretly, he switched sides and began to work for the British. So far, so well known, but I hadn't realised that he was finally 'shopped' by that A1 shit, Aldrich Ames, an officer in the CIA who is now, I'm delighted to say, serving life with no remission in a Federal jail!
This book, meticulously researched by Ben MacIntyre, is positively thrilling. Do yourselves a favour and buy it!
Speaking of books, my wife likes the author Lee Child you recommended. She's on the 5th or 6th in the Jack Reacher series.

Oh yes, good ol' Oleg Gordievsky - mentored Christopher Steele as I recall?

Have a care, Bob, your wife could pick up some nasty tricks from that Jack Reacher who is a very naughty boy!

Re peta tive? Expected a writeup on animal rights with that headline. So from one British School "old boy" to another, repetitive, perhaps? Maybe Oleg can get together with George Smiley over a few pints.
