A fascinating article via Zero Hedge which originated at The American Conservative.com. It details the, er, 'dastardly deeds' of William Stephenson (a Canadian actually) who in 1940 - a rather sweaty time for Britain! - was despatched to the USA by Churchill in order to set up - dare I say it? - a 'fake news factory' to help persuade the American 'Peeps' to give up their really rather sensible insistence on neutrality as the rest of the world went to hell in a handcart!
Stephenson knew his way around the 'meeja' which barely differed in its crookedness then, to what it is today! Also, given Roosevelt's quiet determination to get America into the war, he was content to allow Stephenson to pump his fake news into the American system. Of course, it was not simply love for Britain and dislike of Hitler that moved Roosevelt but his absolute determination to use the disaster of yet another world war to provide an opportunity to create a new, American world order.
So, let's hear it for 'Fake News'!
Well blast! If we can't trust the Brits...who can we trust?! I guess for FDR, if the world was "to go to Hell in a hand cart" then America would be as good a driver as any.
