I have two opposing thoughts concerning China. The first is my admiration for, and sympathy with, the Chinese people. Their history, as far as I can judge from my scanty knowledge, consists of almost constant misery. Today, their burden has been increased even further by this deadly virus. The fact that, in the depth of their woes, they are ruled by a bloated, self-serving, dictatorial - and murderous! - government almost makes me weep.
I can only hope that in their distress enough of them will be driven to enforce change. And yes, I do realise that such a revolutionary change will likely produce an even worse government but if there is just a chance of some improvement which is people-led rather than government led, it may just be worth it. In any event, if it rids this long-suffering nation of the apparatchiks who leech off the backs of the people - then bring it on!
"The more artificial taboos and restrictions there are in the world, the more the people are impoverished — The more that laws and regulations are given prominence, the more thieves and robbers there will be." - Lao Tzu, circa 500BC (2850 years before John Stuart Mill)
