Trump will advance a nominee and Mitch McConnell will have a vote on said nominee. At the moment it appears unlikely there are enough Republican Senators to confirm. No Democrat will confirm. There could be a "hearing now" vote after the election set up but who knows. This is a "black swan" event right in the midst of a bitter campaign unmatched since 1860 in my opinion. The Democrats have aided and abetted and normalized anarchy in the streets and even sedition to advance their political goals. Imagine what this will do to them as they are way over the edge of mental illness already.

What if the set up was reversed...Obama as President and the Dems holding the Senate. What would Obama/Chuck Schumer do? Everyone knows the answer.

The Donald will wait until after the election. If he nominates now, all the sh*t that will attend the 'confirmation' process is a wild card that would be risky. Some of the sh*t might stick. Undecideds might be less frightened of a Trump nominee (his picks so far have turned out well) than of a Biden/Harris nominee. If the Trump nominee is a done deal before election day, undecideds will have one fewer reason to vote for Trump.

With supreme guile or hypocrisy, Mitch McConnell has promised The Don's nominee to replace Ginsburg will get a vote in the Senate. These are the same Mitch McConnell and Republican Senate who blocked Obama's nominee for eleven months until after the 2016 election because the election was "too close".

A vote now would make Republicans yet more unpopular and could cost them Senate seats. They might wait until the lame duck session after the election, but The Don will be urging them to vote as soon as possible.

Can one of "the cousins" tell me the rationale of allowing someone to sit on the Nation's highest court until they die. While I don't dispute someone can be mentally astute right up until they die the odds are that they won't be entirely with it - imagine Joe Biden on the US Supreme Court

Here in Oz a Justice of the High Court, the nation's highest judicial authority, must retire at 70 now matter how mentally sharp they may be.

AussieD, the lifetime position is an offer of "immunity" for judges to hopefully keep them from giving in to political passions. Sometimes it works. All to often lately it has been wobbly. There is more talk these days about a retirement age. For lefty judges, they don't have to be all that "with it". Just vote for or at least back stop "liberalism" as we term it. For conservatives, the requirements are a bit different. Still, about 80 sounds good to me.

G'day Whitewall.

Thanks for the explanation.

I can understand the need for "political immunity". I just have difficulty in not imposing a reasonable retirement age that would help safeguard against getting someone like Biden on the bench well past their use by date.

Here you are Bob:

Wigner’s Friend,

PJ Media isn't exactly a non-biased source. However, their point that the president and Senate are technically allowed to appoint and confirm a judge at any time during their tenure and sessions is correct as I understand it. However, the tradition of not pushing the issue close to an election was established by Abraham Lincoln, whom present day Republicans (without credibility) claim to identify with.

My personal view is that Ginsberg was a selfish old bat who had serious health issues before the Obama administration and could have retired during it. I also doubt the right should be sure this is all going to work out well for them.

Btw, claiming Biden is senile while supporting Trump doesn't pass the laugh test.

Bob,

“ PJ Media isn't exactly a non-biased source.” and the unbiased media in the USA is? At least you admit that they have a point.

I wonder just how long the Demrats kept the wicked witch on life support so that she could pop her clogs just before the election, possibly causing problems for Trump to nominate a replacement? The Left may be claiming she is the biggest saint since Jean d'Arc but, in reality, she was just another tool to be used for political purposes. I also wonder how many street parties there have been/will be.

Justice Ginsburg, eugenicist ...

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/09/ruth_bader_ginsburg_eugenicist.html

https://eppc.org/publications/undesirables/

JUSTICE GINSBURG: Yes, the ruling about that surprised me. [Harris v. McRae—in 1980 the court upheld the Hyde Amendment, which forbids the use of Medicaid for abortions.] Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of. So that Roe was going to be then set up for Medicaid funding for abortion.

Seems Ginsburg was fashioned from the same mould as Margaret Sanger ...

https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2017/11/27/margaret-sanger-was-eugenicist-why-are-we-still-celebrating-her

... founder of Planned Parenthood and famous for saying this ...

"The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it."

The history of the progressive movement in the US is truly the deepest cesspit of all in the West: The slavers, the segregationists, the white supremacists, the eugenicists. Every time I take a peek I add another to the list. It's not a fun Left / Right, Libertarian / Authoritarian ding-dong thing anymore, Bob. What you and your sub-genre of "progressive" stand for is truly rotten to the core, inhuman, evil.

Never before in the history of America and the West has an election mattered more than this one. Even the 1932 election in Germany might not measure up to the carnage the progressive movement in America will cause - not just in the US, but worldwide - if it wins in November.

SoD

Loz, people who claim to be progressive are saying others are not. So how do the progressives define progress! I just visited the Clava Stones outside Inverness which are 4000yrs old. The people who built them must have had progressive ideas. They knew when the Sun raised and fell.

Donald has to follow the law. Interesting. Last I heard he has said he will select a woman. According to the law to make a decision on genitalia is against the law. So he isn't.

Lord T, she could be a woman and have a wee willie. Woman are not the same anymore.

Friend of Wigner,

Yeah your questioning Bob as to 'the unbiased media in the USA is?' is actually pretty easy to spot out in the wild, really all you gotta do is spot the horizontal lines because in nature, everything should appear vertical.

JK,

Wise of you to read a piece written by an electrical engineer who had contact with a three letter organization. The old lefty journalist I. F. Stone recommended reading the NYT starting at the back page.

I was just going to let it go, but there are no completely unbiased sources. Some are just much worse than others. Associated Press nearly always plays it down the center. PJ Media, MSNBC and Fox News don't even pretend to. Every big outlet also has a company (pro-commerce) bias.

Group think is everywhere. Except this blog, of course.

Bob,

Even the NYT readers are becoming tired of BLM’s antics. Despite the benign reporting check out the comments:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/21/us/black-lives-matter-protests-tactics.html

"I was just going to let it go."

Well I guess there's a first time for everything.

Yeah right.

Wigner’s Friend,

It's not just NYT readers:

JK,

You mentioned my name.
