God, life's boring! Even so, as I have remarked before, many a time and oft (perhaps too oft!), sometimes boring is better than exciting! Part of the problem for me in this 'Covid' era is that my scientific/medical knowledge is miniscule and even though, as my regular visitors will know, I am never averse to making a prat of myself on all sorts of subjects, virus behaviour, along with sub-atomic particle behaviour is way beyond my ken! In these sorts of situations I simply dig in and keep my head down!
Next Tuesday's US election: Yet another subject about which I have little to say - let alone forecast! My sincere hope is that 'The Donald' will win, not because I am a great admirer of the buffoon but simply because an (un)Democrat regime would be a disaster! Here's hoping!
I loathe and detest the National Trust! 'Back in the day', the 'Memsahib' was always eager to visit this or that stately, historic house most of which were run by the National Trust. Not me! I could only think of the families who had built them and lived in them for hundreds of years before being forced out by rapacious governments. Today, The Mail reports that the jumped-up bureaucrat who runs the NT is determined to publicise any of the houses whose previous owners were associated in any way with the slave trade. Well, I expect it gives the smug, stupid woman a warm glow of self-appreciation even if nobody but her and few Lefty twerps gives a toss!
Farewell, Sir Sean, and thank you: I think that Sean Connery's performances as 'James Bond' were simply superlative! There is no doubt that he looked the part of an exceedingly dangerous man and his growly, Scottish accent added to the menace.
No more rumbles
The "awokening" of the NT sounds like a sleazy affair. I hope people like Luarence Fox and his Reclaim Party are fighting back.

Maybe that'll come through. I dunno.
If it does though, be quick to hit the 'unmute' - truly inspiring even if, highly unlikely.

We gave up on the National Trust this year. As far as I can see it is mainly aimed a children these days.
Posted by: Uncle Mort | Sunday, 01 November 2020 at 19:42
The NT has been a national disgrace for years. First it became a corporate monolith which imposed a bland culture of sameness on all its properties. "A great day out" for Middle England, never mind about the history. Then it became woke a few years back, constantly going on about how women, gays, blacks, and trannies were all exploited and repressed in our past. Well, who knew? I always thought that they had a great time in between witch-burning and plagues! We left years ago, although I might join again just so I can go and piss on something irreplaceably historic.

Oh yeah, shame about Connery (I liked him in The Man who would be King) but Nobby Stiles upset me more.
Posted by: Whyaxye | Sunday, 01 November 2020 at 21:01
I liked a lot of Connery's films esp "The Wind and the Lion".
Posted by: Whitewall | Sunday, 01 November 2020 at 21:19
Connery was James Bond. Daniel Craig is probably the best since, but he doesn't fit the character quite as well.
Posted by: Bob | Sunday, 01 November 2020 at 23:20
I liked Connery as an actor but the Bond films never really appealed for some reason.
"The man who would be King", "the Russia House" and "Hunt for Red October" were, in my opinion, his best.
Apparently he was in favour of Scotland going it alone so his judgement was human and fallible.

Howdy from the gun-totin' wilds of southern Oregon. Or 'Ory-gun' as some have taken to calling it. I'm here, smack-dab in a basket of deplorables, clinging to our religion, patriotism, and yes, guns.
OTOH, many of us served in our Armed Forces (me - Vietnam 1967-70. Old guy) Most are educated (me - B.A. Philosophy) - at a time when 'education' meant something different than it does today.
I'm surrounded by good people.
All that to say - I read here just about everyday and I really enjoy the perspective and the humor. Or: humour. But - this 'buffoon' label on DJT just doesn't wash. From where I stand, the man strikes me as the best for the circumstances - and we all know what is at stake here in two days - and has a remarkable record. A few things follow which I append with respect.
"I'm curious. Do you dislike that DJT made torture and cruelty to animals a FELONY, or dislike that he signed the 'Save Our Seas Act' which funds $10 million per year to help international efforts to clean tons of plastic and garbage from the ocean? Does your dislike stem from him giving billions to help in stopping the rampant opioid crisis, or because he wanted to secure the border to keep criminals, human trafficking and drugs from free flow into the country? Do you dislike that he has made a commitment to end child-trafficking and crimes against humanity that has resulted in 1000’s of arrests already? Surely not. It must be something else.
Do you dislike him because we are now energy independent and a net exporter of oil to the world, or that ISIS is destroyed, and that Arabs and Jews are talking peace once again? Do you dislike that he’s ending wars?
Do you dislike that he’s winning and signing new trade deals that benefit Americans instead of costing us our economy? Or do you dislike him because he just slashed the price for medications in some cases 50%, which is driving big Pharma nuts? Or do you dislike that he signed a law ending the gag-order on pharmacists that prevented them from sharing money-saving options on prescriptions?
Do you dislike him because he has been successful in returning some important manufacturing to our land and despite the health crisis, he created a record number of new jobs? Or do you dislike him because has signed USMCA and other international agreements bringing business to our farmers and small businesses, thus benefiting us all?
Or maybe you just dislike the fact that he made a gay man the ambassador of Germany and then asked him to clean up national security and unclassified as much of it as possible for transparency? Or do you dislike that he’s kept almost every campaign promise (with a Congress who work against him daily!) plus many more promises he made later because Washington was much more broken than he thought? Do you dislike like that he works for free, donating his salary to different charities?
Or maybe you dislike what he’s done for the black community? Do you dislike that he listened to senator Scott and passed Invest In Opportunity Zones to help minority business? Do you dislike that he passed prison reform, which gives people a second chance and has made quite a huge difference for the black communities? I'll bet it rubs you raw that he has been praised for his work by the most unlikely representatives of the black community.
Do you dislike that he loves America and puts Americans first? Do you dislike that he loves his flag and his country, that he respects cops, veterans, ICE & First Responders? Do you dislike that he passed VA reforms to benefit the very people who served our country and defend our freedom? Do you dislike he’s brought home over 40 Americans held captive, the last one from Iran?
Do you dislike that he does not sell out America to other countries, like the leaders prior to him have done? Do you dislike that he’s making the world pay their fair share for the UN for protection?"
The article goes on but you get the gist. The media portrait of buffoonery comes from a press that will acknowledge none of the above. I call it bias.
Sorry for the long post! Won't happen again!
Cheers Mates,
D

D,
I think Bob ought to answer that!
Posted by: Wigner’s Friend | Monday, 02 November 2020 at 07:23
Presumably the NT proposed to restore any properties associated with past slavery to the heirs of the original owners, just to show how virtuous it is.
Posted by: Pat | Monday, 02 November 2020 at 08:12
The message from Dave Bagwill (see above) is clear - don't ever mess with 'Oregonists' especially southern 'Oregonists'! I jest, of course, because Mr. Bagwill's comment above is the best defence of Donald Trump I have ever read! Well done!

And no sooner do I read that when I read on 'Zero Hedge' the following:
"Oregon Is On The Verge Of Decriminalizing Heroin, Cocaine, And LSD".

"The media portrait of buffoonery comes from a press that will acknowledge none of the above. I call it bias."
True, but most of all it's overwhelming fear. Our media is utterly craven.

Wigner’s Friend,
Just for you: Contrary to the conventional wisdom, the race is probably close and Trump probably has a decent chance to win. The MSM and Democrats seem to be incapable of learning how much our working class still despises NAFTA, bank bailouts, and politicians like Hillary Clinton who can make $200,000 giving a 30 minute speech on Wall St. then express contempt for what a lot of people see as freedom, and worse, the people personally.
On the other hand, Trump has probably destroyed the Republican party, win or lose, for the years ahead.

Thank you Bob

Nice one Baggers!
I was just going for the holster for a quick fire few rounds: Rocket Man back in his silo, the mad Mullahs back in their silo (minus one who's flying mincemeat these days), the Kurds safe, and enemies in Syria all fighting each other and leaving "Old Hickory" alone, and you beat me to it. And with a shedload more ammo too!

"Trump has probably destroyed the Republican party... for years ahead"
God knows the party needed something instead of flaccid gentlemen!
Posted by: Whitewall | Monday, 02 November 2020 at 18:47
The Republicans aren't flaccid. It's just that their pants parties are in the form of missiles and big, swinging dollars from the most destructive and backwards industries.

The exaggerated poll results are a benefit to the Dems; if DT wins, the Dems will claim it must be cheating, or voter suppression, because the polls had Biden WA Y out in front.
As the Dems and their puppets the media (or do I have that backwards?)loudly proclaim a dishonest election result, it could go to the Supreme Court. BUT - the Dems have already de-legitimized that in the public opinion, pointing to purported conservative 'packing' of the court.
So - the election will be painted as won by Biden; the Supremes are suppodedly illegitimate as decisive factors; the entire media (sans Fox and Breitbart) will scream that Biden IS the president; 20,000 Antifa/BLM stooges storm the White House in their manufactured and misled fury.
I'm not gonna sleep tonight. Even if Trump wins bigly, FB/Google et. al. have said they will not call it.
I've been reading the Stoics almost daily, and have not attained the equanimity they touted.
"Keep your mind fixed on God, and your hand on your weapon".
Southern Orygun, over and out.

Fairly certain that's the "ad" Uppers had intended.
And, it ain't in my own humble opinion, all that 'satirical'!
